How to measure your dog's neck Traditional collars and hound and whippet collars. Place a soft measure around the mid section of the dog's neck, and place two fingers between the measure and the neck (one on top of the other, not side by side). In the case of small dogs, and dogs with fine hair, one finger may be sufficient. This is the size to order. Or you can measure a collar that fits your dog. Lay the collar out flat and measure from the tip of the buckle to the hole that is used. This is the size to order. Half checks and show sets. Place a soft measure up behind the ears and take a firm measurement (not tight). This is the size to order. The chain will open 4½ inches (11 cm) to allow the collar to go over the head and drop to the base of the neck.
